Curriculum Intent

“Allow students to explore the ever evolving media landscape. Students will understand how the media influences us, some of the complexities of the media industry and how audiences are a vital part of the media. They will also learn how to approach media products in an analytical, questioning and critical way, helpful in their future lives.”

At the Macclesfield Academy we have a hugely successful Media Studies department where students follow a varied and interesting curriculum. It is this carefully constructed programme that allows students to reach the highest levels of academic achievement. The Media Studies GCSE is available as an option subject to students in Year 11 from September 2021.

Course structure

Media Studies is a one year course that follows the AQA specification. The course is 70% external assessment responding to a range of Close Study Products and 30% non-exam assessment:  creating a media product.  Students are given a choice of five annually changing briefs set by AQA.

Students are required to study media products from all of the following media forms:
• Television
• Film
• Radio
• Newspapers
• Magazines
• Advertising and marketing
• Online, social and participatory media
• Music video
Students will engage with these products through four theoretical frameworks:
• Media language
• Media representation
• Media industries
• Media audiences

Media Studies is a hugely popular option at GCSE which students find enjoyable and are highly enthusiastic about.
