Today, a group of students from The Macclesfield Academy met with Niel Danns from Youth Sports Trust to engage with a programme called 'Active in Mind', which aims to empower students as Young Mental Health Champions to deliver interventions for their peers.

Guided by a mentor, during this 6 week project, our Young Mental Health Champions: Morgan R, Heather D, Johanna H, Charlotte L and Mirell M, will lead on activities focused on looking after our bodies, mindset and environment, with the aim of improving mental health and wellbeing.

This morning, training started with collaborative sessions, where the group of five discussed and shared their thoughts on various questions posed. One focus of conversation was around 'aspiration' as the girls delved into their ideas of what aspiration is, why it is important, and how they could encourage aspirations in those who may not have any. The Mental Health Champions also explored the importance of keeping our bodies healthy, considered the impact of an individual's environment and aspects of life that can affect our mindset, from stressors to practising mindfulness.

Armed with the right tools, knowledge and support, The Macclesfield Academy's Young Mental Health Ambassadors went on to apply what they had learnt to plan activities, which were trialled and delivered brilliantly to their nurture group in the afternoon.

We look forward to seeing how this project develops and well done to our Young Mental Health Champions for taking on such an important role!
