"They did with style what many of us might shy away from doing ourselves."

On the evening of Tuesday 7th February 2023, The Macclesfield Academy was host to the 'District Rotary Youth Speaks Competition', organised by the Rotary Club of Macclesfield Castle.

This event saw the gathering of young speakers from Macclesfield Secondary Schools: Tytherington School, Fallibroome Academy, All Hallows College and of course, The Macclesfield Academy, for an evening of eloquent debate and thought provoking speeches.

Mr Galvin opened the evening by welcoming all and praising the collaboration of secondary schools in healthy competition, encouraging contestants to "be proud of representing your school".

Broken into two age groups - the intermediate heat with students from KS3 and the senior heat made up of teams from KS4, the evening was rich with humour, intriguing facts and inquisitive questioning.  Each team, made up of a Chairperson, Speaker and Proposer of a Vote of Thanks, had prepared a speech around their chosen topic, ranging from: The British Monarchy, Technological Augmentation and Space Exploration to LGBTQIA, Fate vs Free Will and Women's Rights.

Representing The Macclesfield Academy and securing equal second place in both heats, were:

Brooke E (Chairperson), Sophie L (Speaker) and Grace D (Vote of Thanks), who competed in the intermediate heat with a fantastic speech on LGBTQIA.

and

Mia B (Chairperson), Mia T (Speaker) and Johanna H (Vote of Thanks), who delivered a brilliant talk on Women's Rights in the senior heat.

English teacher and organiser of the TMA debate group, Mr Dethick, was full of praise for both teams, stating that they

"delivered their speeches with confidence, aplomb, articulacy and were in every way an utter credit to The Macclesfield Academy."

Well done to everyone who took part and congratulations to the winning teams:

Intermediate Team winners - All Hallows

Senior Team winners - Fallibroome

It was stiff competition all round!
