Connections

is the theme of this year's British Science Week, with celebrations running between 10th and 19th March 2023.

In celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), here at The Macclesfield Academy, staff have been working together to engage students in science beyond the curriculum, by encouraging them to connect the dots and discover how STEM is incorporated  within subjects across the school.

This week, the school halls and classroom doors present a gallery of clues for students to solve and puzzles linking scientific vocabulary with definitions. PD sessions have been transformed into a zone of creativity, as students have been challenged to produce posters based on 'Connections' while watching science videos for inspiration.

There have also been some excellent science visits and trips, including Year 4 students joining us from Ash Grove Academy for a science lesson on circuits and our own Year 10 students connecting with scientists at Alderley Park.

During their visit to Alderley Park, the UK's largest life science campus, Year 10 students were exposed to the many different career paths available to them through science. Guest speakers shared their journeys as 'scientists' and students were put to the test as they engaged with activities replicating the processes involved in drug development and sample testing, before being invited to see working laboratories during a tour of the site.
