Macclesfield Academy celebrates historic FA Cup upset — and our pupils’ proud part in the story
Back
The Macclesfield Academy was absolutely thrilled to witness Macclesfield FC’s extraordinary 2–1 victory over Crystal Palace in the Emirates FA Cup third round — a result already hailed nationally as one of the greatest upsets in the competition’s long history.
This win means so much to our town. In recent weeks, our pupils have shown exceptional compassion and community spirit. They visited the ground to lay flowers in memory of the club’s 21‑year‑old forward, Ethan McLeod, following his tragic death in a road traffic accident — a gesture that reflected the care and empathy we seek to nurture every day at The Macclesfield Academy. They were also back at Moss Rose midweek, sleeves rolled up, helping staff and volunteers clear snow and ice from the pitch so the fixture could go ahead as planned. Their quiet, practical support exemplifies the values of belonging and resilience we champion.
Mr Galvin, Headteacher said “As a school which values the lessons sport can teach our community in life, we couldn’t be prouder of the achievements of Macclesfield FC. There was a buzz around the school on Friday, and we’re delighted the team could pull off an incredible achievement. I’ve had people contacting me from all around the world to say well done to the club!” Mrs Bedson, Assistant Headteacher even had a shout out on BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast programme to say how proud she was of the TMA student’s efforts!
Ethan, Year 9 student and passionate supporter added “It was unbelievable. After Ethan’s passing we didn’t know how the game would go. That win was for him! It just shows the determination of the club”
As an academy, we are so proud of Macclesfield FC for inspiring the nation and beyond, and of our pupils for living our values so wholeheartedly. Congratulations to the Silkmen, and thank you to every student who paid their respects, braved the cold, and helped make a little football magic possible right here in Macclesfield.
