From 6th March-15th March 387 TMA key stage 3 students took place in a series of activities celebrating science.

Students spent each science lesson of the week on a different question in science. They had fun, invented their own experiments and used their practical and thinking skills in a week of enquiry-based learning.

Should we re-introduce wolves into the Scottish Highlands?

Students discussed the habitat of the Scottish Highlands, and used key words of predator, prey, producer and consumer to build food webs showing the interaction of species in the Scottish Highlands. They then used these food webs to discuss what would happen if wolves were reintroduced. Finally, students debated their own ideas using the evidence. Some thought wolves should be reintroduced as they had been driven to extinction in the UK by human activity. Others thought wolves would be a danger to tourists, wildlife, livestock and farmers.

What is the Best Design for a Bridge?Science week1

Student where challenged to design a bridge that could carry the most mass for the longest period of time. They worked in teams to discuss the best materials such using corrugated or flat paper and what shapes made the strongest supports. They then built and tested their designs. Some designs included innovations such as draw bridges and ciScience week2rcular pillars.

Why are Elephants Ears so Big?

Students used their knowledge of variables and science equipment. By measuring temperature change over time in different containers, they were able to draw conclusions about why elephants ear are large and what colour they should be.

How Fast Does it React?

Students measured the rate of a reaction. They had to experiment with careful measurements such as how much of each Science week4chemical they should use to avoid their experiment ending in a rainbow explosion!

Design a Curious Card

Students randomly picked a card with a letter on and then had to design a science card based on that letter. Students used textbooks, learnt how to use indexes and completed their own research to design their cards. The best cards for each letter were chosen and are on display in school.

Well done to all the students who took part, used their science skills and invented excellent ideas. The science team are looking forward to science week next year.
