Stellar Week for the TMA Science Department
Back
It has been an absolutely stellar week for our Science Department! From solving high-stakes forensic crimes to examining real pieces of outer space, our students have been demonstrating incredible scientific talent, curiosity, and teamwork.
A huge congratulations goes out to our fantastic Year 10 TMA team! On Tuesday, they competed against nine other schools in a thrilling, interactive "Whodunit?" science challenge hosted by Stockport Grammar School.
The team successfully cracked the case by applying scientific skills and knowledge. They systematically analysed clues, examined evidence, and eliminated suspects throughout the day to ultimately charge the correct culprit.
Our students walked away with third-place certificates, but even more impressive was their attitude. They showed outstanding enthusiasm, brilliant teamwork, and superb resilience. They even mastered complex laboratory equipment they had never seen before!
A massive well done to our brilliant young scientists: Harry, Joe, Josh and Arnita
The excitement continued back on campus as the Science Department successfully managed to "Borrow the Moon" for the week.
Through the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), we were loaned an extraordinary collection of authentic lunar samples collected by NASA during the historic 1972 Apollo 17 mission, alongside a fascinating array of real meteorites.
Our students became space scientists for the week. They eagerly investigated the celestial samples to learn:
- What different space rocks are made up of
- How to identify their cosmic origins
- How meteorite impact planetary bodies
As a fun and educational twist, students also investigated famous moon landing conspiracy theories. By looking at the hard scientific evidence right in front of them, our classes successfully debunked the myths with logic and physics!
